What is Battleworld?
A planet sewn together from dead worlds, ruled by a god in an iron mask. Here is how both Battleworlds worked, who ran their domains, and how Doom's ended.
Battleworld is the setting of both Secret Wars comics, and its name will be everywhere once the Avengers: Secret Wars publicity starts. There have been two of them, and Doctor Doom matters to both.
The short answer
The first Battleworld (1984)
The Beyonder assembled the first Battleworld from fragments of many worlds and dropped Earth's heroes and villains on it to fight (Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #1, 1984). It was an arena, not a kingdom: the heroes and villains each held a base, and the Molecule Man dropped a mountain on the heroes in the middle of it (#4). Doom used the chaos to drain Galactus and then the Beyonder himself (#10–11).
The second Battleworld (2015)
When the last two universes collided, Doom, holding the Beyonders' power through the Molecule Man, gathered what was left and stitched it into a single planet (Secret Wars #1–2, 2015). Each piece became a domain, ruled by a baron sworn to him. He ruled from Doomstadt and Castle Doom, with the world tree Yggdrasil growing up through the castle and the Molecule Man hidden in a garden as the secret source of his power (Secret Wars #5).
Doom made the sun out of Johnny Storm and made Ben Grimm part of the Shield, a vast wall that kept the dead and worse out of the rest of the world (both per the Marvel Database). Doctor Strange served as sheriff, and a corps of Thors drawn from many realities enforced Doom's law. Sue Storm was his wife, and Franklin and Valeria his children.

How Battleworld ended
The survivors of the old universe brought rebellion with them. In the last issue, the Molecule Man stripped Doom's power so he and Reed Richards could fight as equals. Doom admitted Reed would have done better with it, the Molecule Man gave the power to Reed, and Battleworld was undone as Reed began rebuilding the multiverse (Secret Wars #9, 2015–16). Doom woke in Latveria with his face healed.
Battleworld and the films
Marvel has not said whether Battleworld will appear in Avengers: Secret Wars (December 17, 2027). The film shares its name with both comics, and our Secret Wars hub will track what is confirmed.
