The Doctor Doom guide
Who is Doctor Doom?
Victor von Doom is the monarch of Latveria, a super-genius and sorcerer in nuclear-powered armor, and the Fantastic Four's greatest enemy since 1962. Here is who he is, what he can do and where he stands in October 2026.
Status, October 2026
Dead since One World Under Doom #9 (released November 19, 2025), where he gave up his powers, his kingdom and his life so the Living Tribunal would bring Valeria Richards back. His soul is in Hell, at war with Mephisto alongside Steve Rogers in Captain America vol. 14. In #15 (September 2, 2026) Mephisto offered to return him to life in exchange for his soul. Captain America #16 (October 28) and Avengers: Armageddon #5 (October 21) haven't come out, so whether he's back is still open.

Origin
Victor was born to the Zefiro Romani of Latveria. His mother, Cynthia, bargained with Mephisto for power to protect her people; the bargain went wrong, she died, and her soul was damned. His father, Werner, a healer, failed to save the wife of the ruling baron, was branded a murderer, and died of exposure in the mountains while fleeing with his son. Werner's friend Boris raised the boy.
Victor found his mother's trunk of occult relics and taught himself sorcery and science side by side, until his genius won him a scholarship to State University in America. There he nearly roomed with Reed Richards before demanding private quarters, and there he built a machine meant to reach his mother's soul. Reed read his notes and warned him the calculations were off. Victor threw him out and threw the switch, and the machine exploded in his face. He was expelled (Fantastic Four Annual #2, 1964).
He wandered to Tibet, where a monastery of monks taught him and forged his armor. He put on the mask before it had cooled (Fantastic Four #278, 1985, by John Byrne, who held that the explosion left only a small scar and the hot mask did the real damage). He returned to Latveria, overthrew the Fortunov dynasty, and took the throne.
In 2013 Ben Grimm confessed that, as a college prank, he had smudged one of the mystic symbols painted in Victor's lab the night of the accident. Traveling back to watch, Reed found no evidence it mattered, and even when the Thing pulled young Victor off the machine, Victor chose to become Doom anyway (Fantastic Four vol. 4 #9, “Nativity”).
Personality
He speaks of himself in the third person, and he keeps his word, a trait the historian Sean Howe singles out; his two famous exceptions (betraying Doctor Strange in Triumph and Torment, breaking his deal with the Silver Surfer) are remembered because they're exceptions. He believes he would rule better than anyone and set out to prove it on Battleworld and again in One World Under Doom. He loves Latveria and its people with a fierce, paternal pride, and he can't bear humiliation, being touched, or being seen unmasked. In Doomwar, the panther god Bast judged that he truly wishes the best for humanity. He paints, plays the piano, and speaks of science and sorcery as his two hands.
